Wish Chandelier
Thumbnail 1 Thumbnail 2

The wish chandelier was completed in 1996 during an art residency in Yerevan. It was inspired by a pre-Christian folk tradition of tieing bits of cloths around tree branches close to holy sites as a way of making a wish (this practice seems to have an equivalent in many cultures). I asked people I met in Yerevan to write a wish down on a piece of cloth that I gave them. I then hung the wishes from the branches of a chandelier-like structure to create a kind of wish tree, hoping to perhaps help the wishes be realized.
