The concept of play is central to my work. In the studio, play is about inventing, transforming and tinkering with urban, domestic and artistic detritus. Not only do I appreciate the rich variety of textures, densities and colors within my materials, but I find it challenging and exciting to manipulate them until they become exquisite, compelling and evocative objects. The intricate sewing, glueing, painting and embellishing I see as part of the female craft tradition. The visual vocabulary that I use emphasizes the biomorphic, sensual and gestural, and allows each sculpture a unique expressive charge that I hope can communicate on a variety of emotional and psychological levels.
